Hossegor sits on the long, straight sandy coast of the Landes in south-west France, between Bordeaux and Biarritz. On paper it's just another beach break. In reality it has some of the heaviest, hollowest beach-break waves in Europe, and La Gravière, just north of town, is the most famous of them. It has hosted professional contests, including the Quiksilver Pro France.

This guide covers when to go, how the waves work, and what to know before you paddle out on a solid day.

What makes it special: the Gouf

Just offshore lies the Gouf de Capbreton, a deep underwater canyon that cuts into the continental shelf. Most of the Landes coast has a wide, shallow shelf that slows swell down before it reaches the beach. At Hossegor, the canyon lets swell arrive with much less loss of power, and the sandbanks focus it into thick, fast, hollow peaks. Tourism sources credit La Gravière's reputation partly to its position next to the canyon.

West and north-west groundswells work best. Easterly and south-easterly winds blow offshore, most often in the mornings.

Best time to go: month by month

The season Best Time to Ride shows for La Gravière is September to November, the classic autumn season. That's local knowledge, and it's what we use, but it's worth explaining, because the raw numbers alone would point you somewhere else.

Why autumn, when winter has bigger waves?

In our data, the biggest average waves come in January and February (2.1–2.2 m), not in autumn. September and October average only 1.3–1.5 m. So why does every surfer talk about autumn?

  • Wind. Winter swells mostly come with Atlantic storms, and many winter days are onshore and messy. In autumn, the swell starts to arrive while the weather is often still settled, with offshore easterly winds in the mornings.
  • Water and air. In September and October the water is still 20–22°C in our data, after a summer that peaks at 24°C in August. By February it's down to about 12°C, and in January and February the air drops to around 5–6°C at night.
  • Size that works. A beach break like La Gravière has an upper limit. On the biggest winter swells it often closes out. Moderate, clean autumn groundswell is what makes the famous barrels.

Also, keep in mind that these are monthly averages from an offshore model. The Anglet wave buoy, about 20 km to the south, reads higher than the model in every month. On the spot page you can switch to a version of the data calibrated to that buoy.

The sandbanks

Hossegor is a sand-bottom break, and the sand moves. Storms reshape the banks, so the best peaks shift from week to week and sometimes from one swell to the next. La Gravière and the stretch to the north (often called Les Culs Nus) are the best known, and the beaches to the south, toward Capbreton, and to the north, toward Seignosse, offer more peaks to choose from.

The tide note on our spot page: mid to low tide is usually best, and high tide often makes the banks too deep or causes a heavy shorebreak.

Level and who it suits

On small days, La Gravière suits confident intermediates. When the swell is up, it's a wave for experienced surfers: fast, heavy, and breaking close to the beach. Beginners should learn with one of the many surf schools along this coast on a smaller, gentler bank, ideally in summer, when the waves are smallest.

Hazards and etiquette

  • Shorebreak and closeouts. On bigger days the waves break hard in shallow water and snap boards. Injuries are not rare.
  • Rips. Strong currents run along the beach between the banks. Look for the channel before you paddle out, and don't fight a rip head-on.
  • Long paddle-outs. On solid days it can take a long time to get out. Be fit enough for it.
  • Crowds. In autumn the line-up is large and skilled. Wait your turn, don't drop in.
  • Lifeguards watch the main beaches in the summer season (roughly mid-June to mid-September), with flagged swimming zones where surfing is not allowed. Check the flags and signs at each beach. Outside summer, you're on your own.
  • Emergency number in France: 112.

Getting there and around

Biarritz airport is the closest, about 25 km to the south. Bordeaux is the bigger airport further north. A car or a bike makes life easy: the beaches are spread out along the coast, and checking several banks is part of surfing here. Hossegor has a large choice of surf houses, campsites, apartments and hotels, and plenty of surf schools and shops. Summer is the busiest time; in October the town is quieter.

Tips from riders

  • Check the banks at low tide. You'll see where the sand is and where the channels are.
  • Surf the morning. In autumn, the offshore wind is most reliable early.
  • Bring a step-up or a board with a bit more volume for solid days. Getting in early is half the battle at La Gravière.
  • If La Gravière is maxed out or too crowded, drive along the coast. With so many banks, there's usually a less busy peak somewhere.

FAQ

When is the best time to surf Hossegor? September to November. Winter has bigger average waves in our data, but autumn brings cleaner conditions with offshore mornings and water at 17–22°C.

Is Hossegor good for beginners? On small summer days and with a surf school, yes. La Gravière on a solid swell is for experienced surfers only.

Why are the waves so powerful at Hossegor? The Gouf de Capbreton, an underwater canyon just offshore, lets swell reach the beach with little loss of power.

How warm is the water in October? About 20°C in our data. A 3/2 is enough for most.
