Capbreton is a coastal town in the southern Landes, just south of Hossegor and across the harbour channel from it. Offshore lies the Gouf de Capbreton, a deep submarine canyon that brings swell close to the coast. The town's beaches run south from the wooden pier at the harbour mouth, with rock jetties and the remains of wartime bunkers, notably at La Piste, holding sandbanks in place.

West and north-west swells break as peaks along the beaches, and easterly and south-easterly winds are offshore, mostly in the mornings. The beaches nearer the harbour jetty are more sheltered and can still be rideable when the open coast is too big, while the southern beaches such as La Piste and Santocha pick up more swell and become powerful. Summer brings smaller waves for learners, with lifeguarded swimming zones, and autumn brings the best and busiest conditions. Rips run along the jetties, and the shorebreak can be heavy. The water is about 12 to 13 °C in winter and 21 to 22 °C in late summer.
