Les Cavaliers is one of the beaches along the four-kilometre sandy coast of Anglet, between the mouth of the Adour river and Biarritz in the French Basque Country. Rock jetties built along the coast hold the sand in place, and the beach between them produces some of the most powerful and consistent waves in the area. It has hosted international surfing contests.
West and north-west swells break over the sandbanks as fast, punchy peaks, with lefts and rights next to the jetties. Easterly and south-easterly winds are offshore and most common in the mornings in autumn and winter. Autumn is the classic season, with solid swells and lighter winds; in summer the waves are smaller and lifeguards mark separate swimming and surfing zones. The waves are strong, the shorebreak is heavy and rips run beside the jetties, so it suits confident intermediate and advanced surfers. The line-up is crowded with local surfers when it is good. The water is about 12 to 13 °C in winter and 21 to 22 °C in late summer, so a 4/3 is usual from late autumn to spring.
