Best time to go: January–March, November–December
Bloubergstrand is a long beach on the Atlantic coast just north of Cape Town, famous for its view across Table Bay to Table Mountain. In summer, the southeaster, known as the Cape Doctor, blows strongly and often, making it one of the windiest beaches in the world during that season. Kite Beach and Big Bay are the best-known launch areas.
The wind blows side-shore to side-offshore along much of the beach, and it can be very strong and gusty, so the spot suits experienced riders. The water has chop and waves, especially at Big Bay, and the bottom is sandy. The Benguela Current keeps the water cold all year, so a thick wetsuit is needed. Watch for strong currents and keep clear of the rocks at each end of the beach. There are schools and rental centres nearby. The best season runs from about November to March. Take care with valuables in car parks.
