Langebaan Lagoon – Shark Bay
Langebaan, Western Cape, South Africa
Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Windsurfing, Parawing, SUP
Best time to go: January, November–December
Langebaan Lagoon lies around 120 km north of Cape Town, on the West Coast. It is a long, shallow saltwater lagoon, and Shark Bay is one of its best-known riding areas. In summer the southeaster, often called the Cape Doctor, blows strongly and reliably across the lagoon, giving flat-water conditions that are excellent for learning and freeriding.
The bottom is sandy and the water is mostly shallow, so you can often stand up, though foilers should watch the shallows at low tide. Parts of the lagoon lie inside the West Coast National Park, where zoning rules limit where wind sports are allowed, so check the current regulations and use the designated areas. The best season is roughly November to March. The water is cooler than you might expect, so a wetsuit is usually needed.
