Witsand sits at the mouth of the Breede River on the southern Cape coast, between Cape Town and Mossel Bay. The area is known as one of the windiest places on this stretch of coast. In summer, roughly October to March, strong easterly and south-easterly winds alternate with westerlies as weather systems pass, and both directions blow along the river mouth, so there is wind on many days of the season.
The river gives wide areas of flat, shallow water over sand, ideal for learning to foil with a parawing, while the mouth and the sea beyond offer chop and waves for experienced riders. Tidal currents through the mouth are strong, especially on the ebb, and can carry riders out to sea, so ride on the incoming tide and stay inside if unsure. Sharks, including bull sharks, are recorded in the estuary and nearby waters, so follow local advice. The village is small and quiet, with limited services, so bring spare equipment and ride with others.
