Fehmarn – Gold

Burg auf Fehmarn, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany

Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Windsurfing, Parawing, SUP

Best time to go: January, October

Gold lies on the south-west coast of Fehmarn, about two kilometres north-west of the Fehmarnsund bridge that links the island to the mainland. Fehmarn sits in the open western Baltic, so it catches most of the regional winds, and Gold works in both the easterly and the westerly airflows that dominate the area. Easterlies tend to be steadier in late spring and early summer, while westerly fronts bring stronger, gustier days, especially from late summer into autumn.

The water is shallow for a long way out over a sandy bottom with patches of seagrass, which makes it a comfortable place to learn winging and to practise first foil flights, although a shallow mast needs care close in. There are rocky dike sections nearby, so keep clear of them. Kitesurfing has its own designated zone separate from the windsurf and wing area; follow the signs and ask at a local school if unsure. The spot is busy on summer weekends, and the water stays cool, so a wetsuit is usual for most of the season.
