Ribersborg, known locally as Ribban, is a long sandy city beach just west of central Malmö, facing the Øresund strait and the bridge to Copenhagen. Southern Sweden lies in the path of Atlantic low-pressure systems, and westerly to south-westerly winds blowing across the open strait are common for much of the year. North-westerlies and southerlies also work. The wind is often strongest in spring and autumn, while summer brings lighter but warmer days.
The water is very shallow for a long way out over sand, and a series of breakwaters and sandbanks keeps the inner water fairly flat, which suits beginners and early foiling, although foilers need to watch the depth. In stronger winds the outer water becomes choppy. The beach is busy with swimmers in summer, and parts of it are reserved for bathing, so launch from the areas used by local riders and follow any signs. The water is cold outside summer, so a full wetsuit is usual in spring and autumn.
