Best time to go: January–February, October, December
Marstrand is a small island town on the west coast of Sweden, about 40 km north of Gothenburg, in the rocky Bohuslän archipelago facing the Skagerrak and Kattegat. In summer the prevailing southwesterly and westerly winds, often reinforced by an afternoon sea breeze, give good sailing in the sounds between the islands, while the open sea just outside brings larger waves and stronger wind. The water is generally choppy rather than rough inside the archipelago.
Tides are very small, but strong winds can raise or lower the water level and set up currents in the narrow sounds. The many granite skerries and shallow rocks call for careful navigation and an up-to-date chart. A small ferry links the island to the mainland, and the harbour is very crowded with visiting yachts in July. Marstrand has a long-established sailing club and summer sailing schools, and has hosted international match-racing events. The season is short, from late spring to early autumn, and the water stays cool.
