Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Windsurfing, Parawing, SUP
Best time to go: January, October, December
Ringkøbing Fjord is a large, shallow lagoon on Denmark's west coast, separated from the North Sea by a narrow strip of dunes. Hvide Sande, the fishing town at the fjord's outlet, is the main base. The fjord is a classic flat-water venue: westerly winds come straight off the North Sea over the dunes and blow across a wide, shallow body of water, which makes it excellent for learning and freeriding.
The bottom is sandy, but there are plenty of shallow patches, so foilers need to watch their depth and use a shorter mast when learning. On the sea side of the dunes, the North Sea offers waves and stronger, more exposed conditions for experienced riders. The best season is late spring through early autumn, though the area is windy for much of the year. The water is cold, so a good wetsuit is needed even in summer, and boots and gloves outside it.
