Best time to go: January, October, December
Klitmøller is a small fishing village on the north-west coast of Jutland facing the North Sea. It became known as Cold Hawaii for its waves and has hosted the Windsurf World Cup. Low-pressure systems crossing the North Sea bring strong south-westerly to north-westerly winds and wind swell, which break over a series of rocky and stony reefs and sandbars along the coast. Autumn is usually the windiest season with the best waves, and spring can also be good.
The water is cold for most of the year, and a thick wetsuit, hood and boots are normal outside midsummer. Launching is from the beach by the old harbour slipway, with rocks and stones in the shallows. Conditions are best suited to advanced wave sailors; the reefs, cold water and strong currents leave little margin for beginners. Surfers share the main breaks, so follow line-up etiquette. The coast is part of a national park, and the local community asks visitors to respect the dunes and parking areas.
