Wustrow
Wustrow, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany
Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Windsurfing, Parawing, SUP
Best time to go: May–October
Wustrow lies on the Fischland, the narrow strip of land between the Baltic Sea and the Saaler Bodden on the Fischland-Darß peninsula in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Within a short walk, riders can choose the open Baltic beach to the west or the Bodden lagoon to the east. Westerly and south-westerly winds are the most common, and onshore or side-onshore at the Baltic beach they bring short, steep waves, while north-westerly and northerly winds also work well there. Easterly winds suit the Baltic side as they blow over the strip, but they are offshore, so they are for experienced riders only.
The Bodden side is shallow over a large area with a sandy bottom, which makes it a good place to learn kiting, winging, windsurfing and SUP in flat water. The Baltic beach has a sandy bottom with groynes in places. Summer is the busiest season, while spring and autumn bring stronger winds and colder water. Bathing areas and nature-protection zones restrict where wind sports are allowed, so check local rules before launching.
