Fuerteventura – Flag Beach
Corralejo, Canary Islands, Spain
Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Windsurfing, Surfing, Parawing
Best time to go: March
Flag Beach is the first long sandy beach south of Corralejo, at the north-eastern tip of Fuerteventura, on the edge of the Corralejo dunes natural park. It faces east towards the island of Lobos, and the northerly to northeasterly trade wind blows mostly side-shore from the left. Mornings are often light, with the wind building through the day and usually peaking in the afternoon. Some days, heating of the land turns it more onshore.
The water is mostly chop with small waves, which suits learners close to shore and freeriders, wingers and wave riders further out. In winter, north swells can bring much bigger waves and a heavy shore break, which then suits experienced riders and surfers. The main wind season runs from spring to autumn, strongest in summer. The bottom is sand, but reefs and rocks lie at both ends of the beach and are exposed at low tide. The beach is shared with swimmers and schools, so follow the local zones. Water is around 18 °C in winter and 22–23 °C in late summer.
