Lanzarote – Famara
Caleta de Famara, Canary Islands, Spain
Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Windsurfing, Surfing
Best time to go: March–November
Famara is a long sandy bay on the north-west coast of Lanzarote, below the high Risco de Famara cliffs and next to the village of Caleta de Famara. It is the island's main surf beach and a popular kite and windsurf spot. North Atlantic swells reach it in most seasons and are biggest from autumn to spring, when several peaks along the beach give waves for all levels and the reef near the village suits experienced surfers.
From about April to September the north-east trade wind blows on most days, cross-onshore along the beach, often 15 to 25 knots and often strongest in the afternoon. The wind accelerates around the cliffs, so expect gusts at the north end. The water is wavy, with sand along most of the beach and rock near the village. Strong currents and rips are common, especially on bigger swells, and the beach has stretches without lifeguards, so stay within your limits. Surf schools use the middle of the bay; keep clear of lessons. The water is cool, around 18 to 22 °C, so a 3/2 wetsuit is usual.
