San Juan is a small beach of sand and rock a short drive along a dirt track south-west of Caleta de Famara, looking across to the Famara cliffs and La Graciosa. Its wave is a long left over volcanic reef, with a steep drop followed by long walls for turns and the odd barrel; on the best days it links into a second and third section, and a shorter right also breaks. It has hosted the La Santa Pro, a world-tour qualifying contest held in October.
The wave works on north to north-west groundswell, mostly from autumn to spring, with the most reliable swells from about September to December; in summer it is often flat. South to east wind blows offshore; the north-east trade wind makes it messy. It is best around low tide. Entry is from the beach followed by a long paddle out to the peak. The reef is shallow and fast-breaking, there are strong currents and no lifeguards, and the line-up gets busy when it works, so it suits experienced surfers. Water around 18 to 22 °C: a 4/3 wetsuit is usual.
