Hurghada is the largest resort on Egypt's Red Sea coast, about 400 km south-east of Cairo. A steady northerly to north-westerly wind blows down the Red Sea on most days, strongest from spring to autumn, and it reaches the coast cross-shore or side-onshore at many beaches. Several kite and windsurf centres along the coast, often attached to hotels, offer rental, lessons and rescue.
Conditions vary by beach: some have shallow, flat lagoons inside reefs, others open, choppy water. Coral reefs lie close to shore in places, so use the marked channels and wear booties. The water is warm and clear all year, with a light wetsuit useful in winter. El Gouna and Soma Bay, nearby, are popular alternatives.
