El Gouna is a resort town on the Red Sea coast of Egypt, about 25 km north of Hurghada. The prevailing wind blows from the north to north-west down the Gulf of Suez and along the coast for most of the year. It is usually strongest and most reliable from spring to autumn, while the winter months are cooler and less consistent. The desert keeps the weather sunny and dry.
The main kite beaches lie north of the town, around Mangroovy Beach, where shallow sandy lagoons give flat, waist-deep water close to shore with side-shore wind, ideal for beginners and freestyle. Beyond the fringing reef the water becomes choppy, with occasional small waves, which suits more advanced riders. The reef is shallow in places, so ride only in the marked areas and use the launch channels shown by the schools. Several schools operate on the beaches with rescue boats; kiting is organised by station and zone, so check in with a school before riding, especially if you plan to cross the reef.
