Safaga sits on Egypt's Red Sea coast south of Hurghada, and the main riding area is the wide sandy beach in front of the hotels north of the town. The prevailing wind blows from the northwest to north, reinforced by a daily thermal. In the morning it often comes slightly side-offshore from the left, then turns side-shore late in the morning and usually holds until mid-afternoon or later. It tends to blow a little lighter than at nearby Soma Bay.
Near shore there is a shallow, sheltered area with flat water that suits learners, while further out the water turns to open chop, and confident riders sometimes cross to the island offshore. The bottom is mostly sand, but coral patches lie at the edges, so wear booties. Wind blows in every month, with the strongest and most regular season from spring to autumn. Water ranges from about 22 °C in winter to 28 °C in summer. Keep clear of swimmers and dive boats, and check local rules for launch zones.
