Nusa Lembongan – Shipwrecks
Jungutbatu, Bali, Indonesia
Sports: Surfing
Best time to go: April–October
Shipwrecks is one of the three main surf breaks off Jungutbatu on Nusa Lembongan, a small island east of mainland Bali, together with Lacerations and Playgrounds. It is named after the rusting remains of a wreck on the reef. The wave is a right-hander that breaks over a coral reef and can be hollow and fast on good swells. It works on southerly swells during the dry season, roughly April to October, when the south-east trade winds are offshore.
The reef lies a few hundred metres offshore, and most surfers reach it by local boat from the beach, though strong swimmers paddle out. The wave suits intermediate to advanced surfers; smaller days are more forgiving, while big swells make it powerful. The reef is shallow and sharp, and the wave is best from mid to high tide; at low tide it becomes too shallow. Currents between the reefs can be strong, so arrange your boat ride back in advance. The line-up gets busy with surfers coming over from Bali. The water is warm, about 26–28 °C.
