Orewa

Ōrewa, Auckland (Hibiscus Coast), New Zealand

Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Windsurfing, Parawing, SUP

Best time to go: January–April, October–December

Orewa Beach is a three-kilometre sandy beach on the Hibiscus Coast, about 30 minutes north of central Auckland. It faces east into the Hauraki Gulf, so the water is mostly flat to choppy, and easterly sea breezes in summer and stronger north-easterly or south-westerly winds bring good riding conditions. The beach is shallow, with a wide sand flat at low tide.

It is a popular spot for kitesurfing lessons and for windsurfing and winging, especially at the northern end near the estuary. The town has cafés and shops along the beachfront, and the beach is patrolled in summer. Keep away from swimmers in the busy central part of the beach and watch the tide, which changes the riding area a lot.
