Point Chevalier is a suburb on the southern shore of the inner Waitematā Harbour, about 6 km west of Auckland's city centre. The beach at the end of Point Chevalier Road has a large car park, a grassy reserve to rig on, toilets and changing rooms. It is the city's most popular kitesurfing spot, also used by wingfoilers and windsurfers, and a kite school teaches here.
The water is flat close to the beach and choppy further out, where it gets deeper. The spot works in winds from the south-west, the most common direction, through west and north to north-east. Because the wind comes over the city and the land around the harbour, it is gusty, most of all in a south-westerly, and steadier further from shore. The tidal range is about 3 m and changes the spot a lot: at low tide you walk a long way over mud to the water, at high tide there is hardly any beach left to launch and land, so mid tide is easiest. Beginners can practise body dragging and water starts in the waist-deep shallows; experienced riders head further out or look for the sandbar to jump.
Oyster shells lie on parts of the beach and in the shallows: they cut feet and kites, so wear booties and land your kite on the sand or the grass. On busy summer days leave room for swimmers and walkers, and keep clear of moored boats. The water is about 13 °C in August and 23 °C in February: a 4/3 in winter and a 3/2 or a shorty in summer. Auckland City Hospital is about 7 km away.
