Takapuna Beach runs along the east side of Takapuna on Auckland's North Shore, about 10 km from the city centre over the Harbour Bridge, and looks across the Rangitoto Channel to Rangitoto Island. There is parking near the Takapuna Boating Club and along The Strand, with cafés, toilets and showers by the beach. Lake Pupuke, a freshwater crater lake with flat water for windsurfing and winging, is a short walk behind the town centre.

Takapuna has a long windsurfing history, and today it is also a spot for wingfoiling, SUP and, on quieter days, kitesurfing. The beach faces east, so north to north-north-west and south to south-south-east winds blow cross-shore, east winds blow onshore with chop and small waves, and west to south-west winds blow offshore and gusty: don't go out then. The islands of the Hauraki Gulf keep the ocean swell out, so the water is mostly flat to choppy, with small waves only in strong north-easterlies. The bottom is sand, with a rocky reef at the northern end that is shallow at low tide.

In summer the beach is busy with swimmers, so launch away from them and keep out of the swimming areas; further out, ships use the Rangitoto Channel. Kiting needs care: the beach gets narrow at high tide and there are trees and buildings behind it, so it suits experienced kiters with a helper. The water is about 13 °C in August and 23 °C in February. North Shore Hospital is in Takapuna.
