Tecomán, Colima, Mexico

Sports: Surfing

Best time to go: September–October

Pascuales is a beach on the Pacific coast of Colima, near the town of Tecomán and south-east of the port of Manzanillo. It is known as one of Mexico's heaviest beach breaks, where swells break over sandbanks as thick, hollow peaks, often compared to Puerto Escondido.

South and south-west swells from the southern hemisphere and tropical storms arrive from about April to October. Mornings are often calm or offshore with light winds from the land, while sea breezes usually build in the afternoon. The waves are very powerful even at moderate sizes, with heavy closeouts, strong rips and a dangerous shorebreak, so it is a spot only for experienced surfers with suitable boards; broken boards are common. There are no regular lifeguards, so surf with others. The beach also has a small fishing village, and visitors should respect local people and surfers. The water is warm, about 28 to 30 °C in the swell season, so boardshorts or a light top are enough.
