Troncones is a small beach village on the Pacific coast of Guerrero, about 30 kilometres north-west of Zihuatanejo. The coast here faces south-west and has several kinds of waves within a short distance: beach-break peaks in front of the village, a left-hand point over rock and reef at Troncones Point, and the long left of Manzanillo Bay at the northern end.
South and south-west swells arrive from about April to October, with tropical storms adding bigger swells in some years. Light land breezes from the north and north-east make mornings clean, while onshore sea breezes usually build in the afternoon. Small days suit beginners on the beach, and the point and bigger swells suit intermediate and advanced surfers. The reef at the point is shallow in places, with sea urchins, and rips form along the beach on bigger days. The winter months bring smaller and less frequent swells. The water is about 26 °C in winter and 29 to 30 °C in summer, so boardshorts or a light top are enough.
