Best time to go: August–October

Evans Bay is the large bay of Wellington Harbour between the suburbs of Roseneath and Kilbirnie and the Miramar Peninsula, a few minutes' drive from the city centre along Oriental Parade and Evans Bay Parade. Windsurfers call it the Ditch, and Kio Bay, a small bay on the city side past Balaena Bay, is probably the most often sailed spot in the Wellington area. Other launches are Shark Bay and Shelly Bay on the Miramar side and the head of the bay at Kilbirnie. Parking and rigging space along the road are limited.

The bay runs north to south and acts as a wind tunnel for Wellington's two main winds: the northerly, which blows most often, and the southerly. Both can be strong. A northerly brings chop and small swell into the bay, while a southerly leaves the water flatter, with good chop as it builds. True northerlies and southerlies are steadiest; other directions get gusty. Launch from Kio Bay in strong northerlies or southerlies, or from the head of the bay in a north-westerly. Windsurfers sail slalom and freestyle here, and the bay is also used for wingfoiling.

The beaches are small and covered in coarse, sharp stones, so wear shoes, and the wind is turbulent close to shore: this is not a place for beginners. The bay is busy with yachts and motor boats, some of them trolling fishing lines, so keep a lookout. The water is about 13 °C in August and 18 °C in February: a 5/4 or 4/3 in winter, a 4/3 or 3/2 in summer. Wellington Hospital is about 10 minutes away.
