Angourie
Yamba, New South Wales, Australia
Sports: Surfing
Best time to go: March–August
Angourie is a small coastal village just south of Yamba on the north coast of New South Wales, next to Yuraygir National Park. Angourie Point is a long right-hand point break over rocks and boulders, and the area is part of a National Surfing Reserve. On a solid east to south-east swell the wave peels along the point with long, powerful walls that can be fast and hollow, and southerly to south-westerly winds blow offshore. The best season is autumn and winter, roughly March to August.
The wave is powerful and breaks close to the rocks, so it suits experienced surfers only; getting in and out over the boulders needs good timing. The line-up is small and competitive, with a strong local surf community, so take your turn and respect local priority. Spooky Beach and other nearby breaks offer alternatives when the point is too big or too crowded. The water ranges from about 18 °C in winter to 25 °C in summer, so a 3/2 wetsuit is needed in winter and a spring suit in the shoulder seasons.
