Gold Coast – Duranbah
Tweed Heads, New South Wales, Australia
Sports: Surfing
Best time to go: February–August
Duranbah, often called D-Bah, is a short beach on the New South Wales side of the border at Tweed Heads, between the rocky headland of Point Danger and the southern training wall of the Tweed River mouth. Facing east, it picks up almost any swell, from south-east groundswells to north-east windswells, and it often has waves when the Gold Coast point breaks are flat. The sandbanks near the river wall and in the middle of the beach give punchy, often hollow lefts and rights.
Westerly to south-westerly winds blow offshore, which happen most often in the cooler months; summer north-easterlies are onshore. The waves are more powerful than they look, and strong rips run near the river wall and the rocks, so it suits intermediate and experienced surfers; beginners do better on the more sheltered beaches nearby. The line-up is busy with local and travelling surfers. The water ranges from about 20 °C in winter to 26 °C in summer, so a spring suit or 3/2 is useful in winter.
