Lennox Head
Lennox Head, New South Wales, Australia
Sports: Surfing
Best time to go: March–August
Lennox Head lies on the far north coast of New South Wales, south of Byron Bay. At the southern end of Seven Mile Beach, a headland of volcanic rock forms a long right-hand point break, part of a National Surfing Reserve. On a solid east to south-east swell the wave peels along the boulders for several hundred metres, with fast, powerful walls and barrel sections. Southerly to south-westerly winds blow offshore, and the best season is autumn and winter, roughly March to August.
The wave is powerful, the bottom is made of large boulders, and getting in and out over the rocks is the hardest part, especially on big swells, so it suits experienced surfers only. Strong currents run along the point on bigger days. The line-up is competitive with very good local surfers, so take your turn and respect local priority. Seven Mile Beach to the north gives easier beach-break waves for less experienced surfers. The water ranges from about 19 °C in winter to 26 °C in summer: a 3/2 wetsuit in winter, boardshorts in summer.
