Queens Beach North is the northern end of Queens Beach in Scarborough, on the Redcliffe Peninsula in Moreton Bay, about 35 km north of Brisbane's city centre. Local riders call it the place to foil in Brisbane: you park almost at the water's edge, set up on the grass behind a sandy beach, and the water is deep enough to foil a few metres out on any tide. There are toilets by the car park.
Almost any wind direction can be ridden somewhere on the peninsula, but the usual summer winds here are north-easterly and south-easterly; the south end of the beach has a little shelter in a south-easterly on a mid to lower tide. No islands block the bay to the east, so when the wind is up it builds a rolling swell of about 2 to 3 feet, with faces up to 4 feet in a strong southerly, and there is no shore break. This makes it good for downwind foiling, and many parawingers and foilers do runs along the front. South-easterlies are common in autumn, winds are often very light from about May until the westerlies of late winter, and north-easterly sea breezes return from September. The weather station at the end of Redcliffe Jetty usually reads a few knots more than you get at the beach.
It is mainly a wing and foil spot for intermediate and experienced riders. Kiters find it a tricky place to launch and land, especially at a very high tide, when the beach is narrow. Rocky outcrops show along the peninsula at lower tides; at Queens Beach South, just to the south, don't go north past the apartment block, where the rocks start. Expect chop and swell rather than flat water, and keep clear of swimmers. The water is about 18 °C in August and 27 °C in February: a 4/3 in mid-winter, a 3/2 or a shorty in spring and autumn, boardshorts from November to March.
