Wellington Point, Queensland (Moreton Bay), Australia

Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Windsurfing, Parawing

Best time to go: January–February, October–December

Wellington Point is a narrow point in the Redlands, on the western shore of Moreton Bay about 25 km south-east of Brisbane's city centre, at the end of Main Road. At low tide a sand spit runs out to King Island, and the water on either side of it is where kiters, wingers and windsurfers ride. The reserve has parking, toilets and food, but parking fills up on windy weekends.

The usual winds are north-easterly sea breezes in spring and summer and south-easterlies in autumn, and it is one of the few Brisbane spots that also works in winter westerlies. In a north-easterly the water behind the sandbank between the point and King Island is mirror-flat and standing depth from mid to three-quarter tide. Locals ride the eastern side in southerly winds and the western side in northerlies. South-easterlies bring chop and are best from mid to high tide; at low tide the eastern side is too shallow and you have to walk a long way out. A dead southerly blows off the land and is gusty, and so are westerlies.

The flat, shallow water suits learners, freestyle and speed runs, but the spot gets busy, so respect the riding zones and keep clear of swimmers. Council rules don't allow rigging or launching kites on the grass: set up on the sand below the high-tide mark, where room runs out at a very high tide. The bottom has rocks, coral fragments, shells and mud in places, so wear booties and watch your fin at low tide. Downwind there is a long stretch of open bay towards Manly and Thorneside, so make sure you can stay upwind. The water is about 18 °C in August and 27 °C in February: a 4/3 in mid-winter, a 3/2 or a shorty in spring and autumn, boardshorts from November to March.
