Noosa – First Point
Noosa Heads, Queensland, Australia
Sports: Surfing, SUP
Best time to go: January–May
First Point is the most sheltered of the series of right-hand point breaks around Noosa Heads, on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. It lies at the eastern end of Noosa Main Beach, where the headland of Noosa National Park begins, and further points such as Tea Tree and Granite Bay follow along the headland. Because the coast faces north, the wave needs a sizeable easterly or north-easterly swell to break, and it is at its best during the cyclone season, roughly January to May. The prevailing south-easterly winds blow offshore.
The wave is slow and peeling over sand and rocks, which makes it a famous longboard spot and a good place for beginners and intermediates on small days; stand-up paddlers use it too, but they need to follow the local etiquette and give way. It is one of the most crowded line-ups in Australia, so wait your turn and do not drop in. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards. The water ranges from about 21 °C in winter to 27 °C in summer: boardshorts in summer and a spring suit in winter.
