Woorim Beach is the ocean side of Bribie Island, facing east across the northern entrance of Moreton Bay towards Moreton Island, about 70 km north of Brisbane's city centre. You cross the Bribie Island Bridge from Sandstone Point and drive over the island to Woorim, about an hour from the city. The Bribie Island Surf Life Saving Club patrols the main beach, with parking by the surf club, and the sandy beach runs south towards Skirmish Point and north for many kilometres.
Woorim works in winds from north-east to south-east, the usual sea breezes and south-easterlies of south-east Queensland. Westerlies blow offshore here; on those days local kiters go to the Pumicestone Passage on the island's west side instead. Locals time it with the tide: in a north-easterly the outgoing tide works best and the incoming tide gives little, while in a south-easterly they ride Woorim on the incoming tide. When a swell runs there are uncrowded waves, but on many windy days the sea is a short, messy chop.
This is a spot for experienced riders. The water gets deep quickly, the shore break dumps when the surf is up, and strong currents run along the island, flowing north in southerly winds, so you need enough power and the skill to stay upwind and get back to the beach. There is no flat water here: learners go to Sandgate or Brighton on the mainland. Keep well clear of the patrolled flags and swimmers (local kiters ride downwind of them), and don't kite north into Bribie Island National Park, where rangers have told kiters off. The water is about 19 °C in August and 27 °C in February: a 4/3 in mid-winter, a 3/2 or a shorty in spring and autumn, boardshorts from November to March.
