Brouwersdam

Ouddorp, Zeeland, Netherlands

Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Windsurfing, Surfing, Surf foiling, Parawing, SUP

Best time to go: January, October–December

The Brouwersdam is a dam in Zeeland, in the southwest of the Netherlands, separating the North Sea from the Grevelingen, a large saltwater lake. Because it has water on both sides, there is somewhere to ride in most wind directions, which makes it one of the busiest and most popular wind spots in the country.

The Grevelingen side offers flat water with little tide and a shallow, sandy bottom near shore, which is excellent for learning and freeriding, though foilers should watch the shallows. The North Sea side has chop and waves, tidal currents along the dam and more exposed conditions for experienced riders. Southwesterly winds are common, especially in spring and autumn, and strong autumn storms can bring big waves. The water is cool for much of the year, so a good wetsuit is needed outside the summer. There are parking areas, cafés, schools and rental centres along the dam. The area can be very busy on windy weekends, so follow local rules about riding zones.
