Sports: Kitesurfing, Windsurfing, Surfing, SUP
Best time to go: January–May, September–December
Scheveningen is the seaside district of The Hague on the North Sea coast of South Holland, with a long sandy beach, a pier and a harbour at its southern end. It is the centre of Dutch surfing: west to north-west wind swell breaks on sandbanks along the beach, and the harbour moles shelter the waves and shape good banks when the wind is from the south-west. The best surf usually comes in autumn and winter, often short-period, and easterly winds blow offshore on clean days.
Kitesurfing and windsurfing take place in designated zones away from the main bathing area, mostly in south-westerly to north-westerly winds that blow onshore to side-shore and create choppy, wavy conditions. The bottom is sand throughout. The beach is very busy in summer, and swimming zones and seasonal rules apply, so check local rules. Strong currents run along the coast and near the harbour moles, and the water is cold most of the year, so a full wetsuit is usual.
