Zandvoort, North Holland, Netherlands

Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Windsurfing, Surfing, SUP

Best time to go: March–November

Zandvoort is a seaside town on the North Holland coast, just west of Haarlem. Trains from Amsterdam take about half an hour, and the station is a short walk from the beach, which makes it one of the easiest places in the Netherlands to reach without a car. Schiphol airport is about 20 km away.

Kiting is allowed in marked zones. The main one is north of the town at The Spot beach club by the northern lifeguard post, the closest to the station and the busiest, especially on holidays; another zone further north by Riche beach club is also popular. The southern zone at the watersports club by the southern lifeguard post is quieter and easiest to reach by car, with cheaper parking at the south end of town. On hot, busy summer days with light wind the zones can be closed for swimmers.

The beach faces west and works in winds from south-south-west round to north-north-east: south-west and north are side-shore, west is onshore. Three sandbars make the North Sea waves break and re-form, so there is chop close in and small waves further out; surfers use the same beach in a swell. The tidal current runs north on the ebb and south on the flood, so plan your session so that it doesn't carry you away from your launch. Kite schools give lessons on the beach. The water is about 6 °C in February and 21 °C in August: a 5/4 or thicker with boots, gloves and a hood in winter, and a 4/3 even in summer. The nearest hospital is in Haarlem.
