Wissant is a village on the Côte d'Opale in the north of France, in the wide bay between the headlands of Cap Gris-Nez and Cap Blanc-Nez, close to Calais and the Channel Tunnel. Its long sandy beach is one of the classic windsurf and kite spots of northern France. The most common strong winds are south-westerly: they blow side-offshore here and come with Channel swell, which gives some of the best wave riding on this coast. North-easterly winds also work.

The tidal range is very big. At low tide the beach is huge and the sea flatter near the shore, while at high tide the beach becomes narrow and the currents along the bay get stronger, so plan sessions around the tide. The water is cold for most of the year, so a full wetsuit is needed, and the busiest seasons for riders are spring and autumn, when the wind is most reliable.
