Best time to go: June, December
Camber Sands is a long, sandy beach near Rye in East Sussex, backed by dunes and facing south into the English Channel. The prevailing south-westerly winds blow cross-onshore, and because the beach sticks out into the Channel, it is often windier than the rest of the coast. Spring and autumn are the windiest seasons.
The tidal range is large: at low tide the beach is several hundred metres wide, with shallow lagoons and flat water, while at high tide space is limited and the sea is choppier. In summer the beach is very busy with visitors, and kitesurfing is restricted to zones and times set by the council, so check the local rules before riding. The water is cold for much of the year.
