Bali – Medewi
Pekutatan, Bali, Indonesia
Sports: Surfing, Surf foiling
Best time to go: April–October
Medewi lies on the south-west coast of Bali in the Jembrana regency, about two hours' drive west of the airport, among rice fields and coconut palms. A rocky point at the river mouth turns south-west swells into a long, gentle left-hand wave that can give rides of a hundred metres or more on a good swell. The bottom is made of smooth rocks, boulders and sand. The best season is the dry season, roughly April to October; early mornings are usually cleanest, before the trade winds pick up and blow across the point.
The wave is softer than the reefs of the Bukit Peninsula, which makes it popular with longboarders, prone foilers and intermediate surfers, while bigger swells add speed for experienced riders. Getting in and out over the rocks needs care, and booties help. The water can be murky after rain from the river, and the beach is black sand and stones rather than a swimming beach. The line-up is far quieter than in southern Bali, but it still fills up on weekends. The water is warm, about 27–29 °C.
