Maldives – Kandooma Right
Guraidhoo, Kaafu Atoll, Maldives
Sports: Surfing
Best time to go: March–October
Kandooma Right is a right-hand reef break off the southern end of Kandooma, a resort island on the eastern rim of South Malé Atoll, next to the local island of Guraidhoo and about 45 minutes by speedboat from the airport. The wave breaks along the reef edge towards the channel, giving fun walls on small days and fast, powerful sections when the swell is bigger. Other breaks in South Malé Atoll, such as Guru's and Riptides, lie within a short boat ride.
The season runs from about March to October, when south and south-east swells reach the atoll. Westerly and north-westerly winds during the south-west monsoon blow offshore, and the shoulder months often bring lighter winds and glassy sessions. Access is by boat, from the resort, the local islands or surf charters, and the number of surfers can be limited by local arrangements, so check before you go. It suits intermediate and experienced surfers. Watch for shallow coral, strong currents in the channel and passing boats. The water is warm all year, about 28–30 °C.
