Maldives – Lohis

Thulusdhoo, Kaafu Atoll, Maldives

Sports: Surfing

Best time to go: March–October

Lohis is a left-hand reef break off the south-eastern side of Hudhuranfushi (formerly Lohifushi), a resort island on the eastern rim of North Malé Atoll, between Thulusdhoo and Huraa and a short boat ride from the airport. The wave peels along the reef towards the channel, with a steeper take-off and long, workable walls that get faster and hollower towards the end on a good swell.

The season runs from about March to October, when south and south-east swells from the Indian Ocean reach the atoll. Westerly and north-westerly winds during the south-west monsoon blow offshore, and the shoulder months often have calm, glassy mornings. Access to the wave is usually limited to guests staying on the island, so check the current arrangements before planning a trip. It suits intermediate and experienced surfers. Watch for shallow, sharp coral on the inside, currents in the channel and boat traffic. The water is warm all year, about 28–30 °C, so a rash vest is enough.
