Thulusdhoo
Thulusdhoo, Kaafu Atoll, Maldives
Sports: Surfing
Best time to go: May–October
Thulusdhoo is a small inhabited island on the eastern rim of North Malé Atoll, about half an hour by speedboat from the airport. Its best-known break, Cokes, is a right-hand reef wave named after the soft-drink factory on the island. It breaks fast and hollow over very shallow coral, especially at lower tides, and is a wave for experienced surfers. The left-hand break known as Chickens lies a short boat ride away and is usually more forgiving.
The season runs from about March to October, when south to south-east swells from the Indian Ocean reach the atoll; the middle months bring the most size and the most crowds. During the south-west monsoon the westerly winds blow offshore on this eastern side, while the shoulder months often bring calm, glassy days. The water is warm all year. Watch for sharp coral, strong currents in the channels and boat traffic near the breaks. Thulusdhoo is a local island, so dress and behaviour rules apply away from the designated bikini beach; check local rules.
