Maldives – Sultans
Himmafushi, Kaafu Atoll, Maldives
Sports: Surfing
Best time to go: March–October
Sultans is a right-hand reef break on the eastern side of Thanburudhoo, a small uninhabited island on the eastern rim of North Malé Atoll, a short boat ride from the airport and the local islands of Himmafushi and Huraa. It is one of the most consistent and best-known waves in the Maldives, with long, powerful walls that can line up for a good distance on a solid swell. The left known as Honky's breaks on the same reef.
The season runs from about March to October, when south and south-east swells from the Indian Ocean reach the atoll; the middle months bring the most size, while the shoulder months often have calmer, glassy days. Westerly winds during the south-west monsoon blow offshore here. Access is only by boat, from resorts, local islands or surf charters, so it can be crowded when several boats arrive together. It suits intermediate and experienced surfers. Watch for sharp, shallow coral on the inside, currents in the channel and boat traffic. The water is warm all year, about 28–30 °C.
