Best time to kitesurf Uruaú

The best time to kitesurf at Uruaú is January, July–December, the season of the local thermal wind, with water around 28°C.

Beberibe, Ceará, Brazil

Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling

Best time to go: January, July–December

Uruaú is a long lagoon behind the dunes in the municipality of Beberibe, on Ceará's east coast, about 90 km south-east of Fortaleza (roughly 90 minutes by car along the CE-040 through Beberibe and Sucatinga). Riders launch at the east end of the lagoon, next to the dunes, where there is the most room; elsewhere the shore can be narrow.

From July to January the easterly trade wind, helped by the heat of the land, blows on most days, usually at 15 to 25 knots: side-shore in the morning and more onshore in the afternoon. Close to the shore the water is very flat and shallow in places, getting choppier further out, and the lagoon does not depend on the tide, which is why many pro and freestyle riders come here to train. On busy afternoons riders take turns on the flattest strip; mornings are quieter. A thin strip of beach separates the lagoon from the open Atlantic, where riders find chop and small waves on the same wind. The water is warm all year, so boardshorts or a lycra are enough, and kite schools and pousadas are a few minutes from the launch.
