Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Windsurfing, Parawing
Best time to go: September–October
Ilha do Guajiru is a small village on the north-west coast of Ceará, about four hours by road from Fortaleza. From July to January the south-east trade wind, strengthened by the afternoon heating of the land, blows cross-onshore along this coast with remarkable consistency, often from mid-morning until sunset. A long sand island shelters a shallow lagoon, so riders can choose between flat water inside and lively chop and small waves on the open sea side.
The bottom is sand throughout, and the lagoon is ideal for learning to fly a parawing and to get up on the foil, though at low tide the foil can touch the sandbanks. Confident riders head out to sea for downwind runs west along the coast towards neighbouring beaches, arranging a lift back by buggy or car before setting off. The wind is strong for most of the season, so bring small wing sizes. The coast is remote, with limited medical facilities, so ride with others and avoid drifting out to sea on the ebb.
