Preá is a small village on the coast of Ceará, about 12 kilometres east of Jericoacoara, at the edge of the Jericoacoara National Park. Its long, straight beach has become one of the main kite and wing bases in north-eastern Brazil, with a wide sandy launch area and plenty of room on the water.
From about July to January the trade winds blow from the east, side-shore and often strong, and are very reliable from late morning to sunset. The water is warm all year, with chop and small waves, and flatter patches between the sandbars at lower tides. Beginners can learn here with schools, while experienced riders use it as a base for downwinders to Jericoacoara and further west. The beach becomes busy in high season, so keep to the right of way rules and watch for kites crossing. Buggies and cars use the beach, and the national park has its own rules, so check the current regulations before driving or riding inside the park.
