Itarema, Ceará, Brazil

Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Windsurfing

Best time to go: September–October

Almofala is a fishing village in the municipality of Itarema, on the west coast of Ceará, about 7 km east of Itarema town and roughly 220 km from Fortaleza airport. From July to December the trade wind, strengthened by the afternoon heating of the land, blows from the north-east to east on most days, and the long sandy beach leaves plenty of room to rig and launch.

East of the village, where a river meets the sea, sandbars hold back the swell. Behind them lies a large lagoon of shallow, flat water, while small waves break on the sandbars themselves, so beginners and freestylers share the spot with riders looking for a few small ramps. Riders who have been there describe the lagoon as big and empty, with few other kiters, and because Itarema is so close Almofala has more places to stay and eat than the remote lagoons nearby. The water level in the river mouth changes with the tide, so ask locally when the lagoon works best. A well-known downwinder runs west from Almofala to Ilha do Guajiru, about 15 km, partly along a river, and the lagoon at Patos is a short drive to the south-east. The water is warm all year, so boardshorts or a lycra are enough.
