Macapá is a small beach village in the municipality of Luís Correia, on the short coastline of Piauí in north-east Brazil, a few kilometres west of Barra Grande. From around July to the end of the year the east to north-east trade winds blow almost every day. Riders who come here regularly say the wind often stays strong into the late afternoon and sunset, which makes it a good base for long afternoon sessions.
The beach is long and open with a sandy bottom. The tide changes the spot a lot: around low tide the river mouth and the shallows give flat water, while at high tide the sea is more open and choppy. Macapá is often combined with Barra Grande and Barrinha, and it is a stop on the downwinders along the Piauí and Ceará coast; arrange those with a school or guide, as river mouths and remote stretches need local knowledge.
